The new Hourglass coffeemaker is powered by nothing more than cold water and time. It brings back the lost art of cold-brewed coffee, and best of all, produces coffee that's nearly 70% lower in acid than hot-brewed. Coffee from the Hourglass cold-brewer is not only much lower in acid and kinder to your stomach, but is smoother and less bitter than hot-brewed coffee.

So, how does the Hourglass work? It's pretty simple: soak coarsely-ground coffee in cold water for 12 hours to create a rich, pure coffee extract. Then, add a small amount of the extract to hot water for a rich, smooth, low-acid cup of coffee. The extract keeps in the refrigerator for up to two weeks in the matching Been Kanteen.

The Hourglass cold-brewer will make three 16-oz. batches of extract from one pound of coffee; the ideal combination is 2.25 cups of ground coffee and 3 cups of water. Each batch will make roughly eight 8-oz. cups of coffee, depending on how strong you like your coffee. That's about 24 cups of coffee per pound. Cold-brewing does yield less coffee than hot-brewing the first time around, but cold-brewing allows you to re-brew the same grounds a second time (drink this brew full-strength), resulting in up to 30% savings vs. hot-brewing. The Hourglass cold-brewer can also be used to cold brew tea, combining 2 ozs. of tea and 7 ozs. of water.
