The Breville Smart Grinder translates your coffee preferences into specific amounts of ground coffee milled to precise settings. It uses an adjustable, stainless-steel burr grinder that can be set to any of 25 settings, from ultra-coarse for a percolator to extra-fine for Turkish coffee. That's all well and good, but what sets the Smart Grinder apart is that it will adjust the amount of coffee ground when you adjust the grind, using what Breville calls Dosing IQ. It adjusts the dose when you adjust the grind.

Here's how it works...first you select which of the 25 grinds you want, using the large knob on the right of the grinder. You'll see the marker in the LCD screen move, from Press/Coarse on the left to Espresso/Fine on the right. Next, push the middle "Amount" button until you see your desired number of cups or shots appear in the screen. Finally, use the left push button to tell the Smart Grinder how strong you like your coffee. Press the Start button and the Smart Grinder will proceed to think about everything you've told it, and grind the right amount of coffee, in the correct grind, for what you want. Did you grind it too fine? Then select a coarser grind with the big knob and press Start again. The Smart Grinder will recalculate and adjust the volume of coffee to reflect the coarser grind. It may be smarter than we are!

There's another really cool thing about this grinder - it has a cradle that lets the filter basket from your espresso machine fit directly into the grinder, so the ground coffee drops right into the filter basket, ready for tamping. Two cradles accommodate just about any filter basket from any espresso machine. The Smart Grinder also comes with an airtight glass jar with measuring lines for ground coffee.
